Rose of Lima was canonized because of her deep devotion to God and her love for the poor. The anchor is a symbol of steadfast faith in the face of great suffering; the crown of thorns is another symbol of suffering. Saint Rose of Limas feast day is on August 23 (formerly August 30). She took a vow of virginity against the will of her parents to become a member of the Third Dominican Order. She died in Lima on Aug. 24, 1617. The beautiful patron saint was born in 1956 in Lima to Spanish Colonists and was known for her piety and chastity.
